What is the I Promise Program?

The I Promise Program is designed to reduce the risk of youth related car crashes and relies on parents as role models by entering into a family contract with their young driver for safe and responsible use of the car.  Key components of the program include a personalized family agreement, mutual accountability, trust and a commitment to safe driving.

The I Promise Program is a safe driving initiative developed for families with new young drivers. It consists of a parent-youth mutual safe-driving contract, a rear-window decal, and a 1-year community monitoring service.

How does the I Promise Program work?
This program was launched in January 2002, after two years of research and development, the
I Promise Program has parents and teens review, discuss and sign a mutual safe driving contract and then affix a rear window decal that displays a toll-free number inviting calls on driver behaviour.  Any call received results in a letter sent to only the parents so they can address the information privately within their family.

Contract Sample Items Include:
• I promise to drive sober.
• I promise to wear my seat belt.
• I promise to drive defensively.
• I promise to keep my mind on the road.

Who should participate?
All families with new young drivers should participate. The first year tends to be the most dangerous for new drivers and sets driving habits that carry on life-long.

Participation by parents indicates their willingness to be a role model of good driving behaviourand this does connect with their children's driving behavior:

A study conducted jointly by the University of North Carolina's Highway Safety Research Center and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) showed that children whose parents had three or more crashes on their North Carolina driving records were 22 percent more likely to have had at least one crash compared with children whose parents had no crashes. Likewise children whose parents had three or more violations were 38 percent more likely to have had a violation compared with children whose parents had none.

Participation by new young drivers indicates their willingness to accept the responsibilities of being a safe motor vehicle driver.

Will the reports ever go to the police or to my insurance company?
The contents of the reports will remain confidential, not being madeavailable to police or insurance companies, except where required by law. Statistical information, without names, will be gathered for research purposes and provided to third parties for such purposes.

What does the I Promise Program cost?

The cost of the I Promise Program is $52.43 ($49.00 plus $3.43 GST).

What expenses does the cost cover?
