Changing your Password
The password to your account should be treated as securely as you would the PIN number for your Bank Card. Passwords must be at least eight (8) characters long, not found in a dictionary, and cannot be the name of a person, place, or thing. Passwords must
not be shared with any other person. The password must be changed as soon as possible after an unacceptable exposure or suspected compromise. To change your password follow the followig steps:
1. Logging in to the Main Server.
You will need a "ssh" client, such as Putty, which is free. Once a ssh client is installed on your machine, connect to "chardonnay.niagara.com" via the ssh protocol.
For security reasons, telnetting to our server has been disabled, and you can only log in via "ssh" now. Ssh has been restricted to our local ip addresses, specifically niagara.com's modem and dsl pools.
2. Changing your Password.
Once connected and logged into the main Niagara.com server. You should be prompted by chardonnay x% where the x is some number corresponding to the number of command lines entered. Simply ignore the number. At the chardonnay x% prompt type passwd and then
press Enter. This will then prompt you for your current password. Enter it and press the Enter key. Next you will be prompted for your new password, please enter it remembering the general rules of thumb from above. Once entered press the Enter key. You will then be prompted for the same new password again to confirm. Once entered, simply press the Enter key. At this point your password should be changed. Please remember to change your dial up software and your mail software to corres
pond with the new password.
Once you have completed your task please remember to disconnect from the main server by typing logout.
