The Toronto birthrate will surge in October and November of 1999 says Erno Rossi, author of White Death-Blizzard of '77, a non-fiction oral history of the only blizzard declared a national disaster. Twenty-one years in print, White Death shows an 18% jump in the birthrate in Canadian Niagara, nine months after the blizzard of the millennium, a storm that killed thirty people and buried others in cars, trucks and the homes of strangers.

The City of Buffalo almost disappeared under snow in this unique winter hurricane but showed only a 3% rise in births, nine months after this 300 million dollar disaster. Rossi says that he thought that he had found something at which Canadians beat Americans other than health care and hockey. But Buffalo's 45% jump in the abortion rate helps to explain the difference in Canadian and American birth rates.

Rossi predicts that both birth and abortion rates will be higher in Toronto because of the record snowfall there in January 1999. People stranded and bored because of snow can find themselves very busy at things other than shoveling.

Rossi self published White Death 21 years ago after rejection by Toronto publishers who told him to come back after he was famous. He laughed all the way to the printers and since has sold tons of books as well as rights to Grenada Television in England for a weather special. Rossi is now looking at a movie script for a blizzard disaster movie. A video about the storm is due in the spring. Borders and Walden Books in the USA want to carry his book nationally. Coles-Chapters have carried White Death for 21 years in Regional Niagara and Western New York Wares distributes it in Western New York.
