LETTERS RE: BILL C-68

During the public debate on Bill C-68, I sent two letters to the editor of the St Catharines Standard expressing my concerns about the bill. The bill represents a serious threat to personal autonomy. The battle was lost, the bill was passed. But, the war isn't over. A lot of people are going to work to get the Liberals defeated in the next Federal elections. Hopefully, they will be replaced by a party with more respect for individualism.

The First Letter:(published Dec 10 1994)

I am writing in regards to the proposed gun control legislation. Anyone who gives this policy some thought must see that the ultimate goal is the confiscation of all privately owned firearms in this country. Any one who denies this is either naive or a liar.

Self defence is one of the most fundamental rights we have. It is based on natural law, and cannot be taken away. Everyone has the right to defend themselves. Guns are needed, not just to defend against robbery and assault, but as the last defense against tyrrany and oppression.

If the Jews of Germany had guns, perhaps the Holocaust could have been averted. If the students in Tianamen Square had guns, perhaps China would be a democracy today. If the peasants in Rwanda had guns, perhaps that massacre would not have happened.

When a society is totally disarmed and pacified, it is completely at the mercy of the ruling powers.

If we value our freedom and autonomy as Canadians, we must fight gun control by whatever means necessary. Everyone who believes in Canada as a society of free autonomous individuals must speak out against this very serious threat to our freedom. Even if you do not own a gun, you must fight for your right to own a gun. Without your rights, you are a slave.

The Second Letter:(published April 1995)

After reading Alan Rock's article in the Standard April 8th, I think I see what he's trying to do. He wants to make it so that no one in Canada ever gets shot again. I guess he feels that getting killed by a bullet is the worst thing that can happen to you.

I get the impression that death by gunshot is worse than death resulting from being stabbed, bludgeoned, strangled, smothered, drowned, throttled, beaten, hung, decapitated, drugged, poisoned, etc., etc.

I guess that once that all the guns and bullets in this country are gone, we'll all live together in peace and harmony. Criminals will no longer hurt their victims or innocent bystanders, husbands will no longer attack and kill their wives. No one will commit suicide ever again.

Thank you Mr. Rock for making it possible to eradicate violence in Canada, but, just to be on the safe side, maybe you should register and ban all knives as well.
