Bill Livingston, a local anti-communist wrote this letter to the editor of the St Catharines Standard concerning the activities of Welland-Thorold New Democratic Party member Peter Kormos. Commie watchers have for a long time been concerned about the "true motives" of this person.
Mr Livingston wrote:
It would be interesting to see how many people in the Welland-Thorold riding would lend their support to Marxism and the runious ideology of communism. After witnessing the enslavement of half the world to this school of thought, I hope there would be few takers.
However, working on this premise, we wonder why the elected official for this riding (Peter Kormos, NDP MPP) would be listed among the keynote speakers at the Marxism '97 rally held at Ryerson back on May 16th.
Not only was Mr. Kormos listed as a keynote speaker at this Karl Marx hootenany, other dignitaries included a former member of the Black Panthers, the "Little Rock Nine", and a "who's who" of the modern day "Red Guard" operationg in Norht America.
The black clenched fist logo and the socialist workers plackards of the
International Socialists Organization have been the one identifiable earmark of well-organized rioting all over Europe and North America. From London to Hamburg to Toronto, even as recently as March 29th, this organization presided over four days of anarchy to lay waste to the French city of Strasbourg.
Having personally been witness to these balaclava-clad communists in the streets of Toronto (remember "opening legislature?"), I don't mid saying that as Canadians, we better wake up and quick. This pestilence of Marxism has not only infiltrated our elected officials, but every university, every trade union, and on and on and on.
As a nation Canada is beyond measuring the costs of the activities of the International Socialists, their splinter groups and their philosophy in mere dollars and cents.
We cannot afford to allow ourselves to be bamboozled by the semantics, and soft rhetoric of the NDP "democratic socialism" nonsence, and we must be more alert of the "hidden agenda"- they had elections in the former Soviet Union too!
If it looks like a duck, waddles like a duck, and quacks like a duck - it's a duck.
Sorry Peter, better dead than red.Bill Livingston

As of June 27th, the letter has generated two replies. I know nothing about the authors, so I don't know if they are Communists, commie dupes, or just misguided citizens. Unfortunately, the last two are basically the same.

Regarding the letter wake up to pestilence of Marxism (the Standard, June 11), Bill Livingston's misinformation focuses attention on the splintered and disorganized communist movement in the West. It would have us believe that Peter Kormos and other elected officials are part of a wider "Marxist conspiracy" that threatens the foundations of our democratic systems. I won't even bother to demonstrate why this foolish.
His views, however, are dangerous because they divert our attention from the real source of extremenst activity in North America - the fringes of the political right. Canadians have been more precisely "bamboozled by the semantics" of the Reform Party than those of the NDP. Furthermore, Mr Livingston wrongly sees the "black clenched fist logo" as "one identifying earmark of well organized rioting all over europe and North America". The racist undertones of such comments actually underline the real dangers that face Canadian democracy.
It is more precisely the forces of neo-Nazism, fascism, and right-wing extremism - driving thousands of young people into the streets of Western capitals under the banners and slogans of the Third Reich and South Africa's apartheid regime - which are the recogniozed symbols of civil disorder in Europe and Norht America. American militias, steeped in anti-semitic and racist rhetoric, carry out savage terrorist campaigns on innocent civilians.
The growing ranks of the Patriots and other white supremacist organizations demonstrate the highly organized and dangerous nature of these groups. Timothy McVeigh is the most horrifying product of such radical elements in our society.
If Mr Livingston is truly concerned about the welfare of Canadian democracy, he should cease his attacks on individuals who seek to further the rights of blacks, natives, women, and the poor. Instead he should reserve his scorn for neo-Nazi groups like the local Heritage Front, who are attempting to disrupt the rich multicultural fabric of our great society.Sevil Ykstort

I almost suspect this letter was ghost written by someone else. We haven't heard from the local resident anti-fascist yet.
When you click on the "marxist conspiracy" link, scroll down the screen and see which mainstream federal party is a full member of the Socialist International.
Often when someone won't demonstrate how foolish something is, it's because
it's true and the writer knows it. It is the greatest success of
International Communism that they have been able to create the
illusion that communism is splintered and disorganized.
Has the writer considered the possibility that
militia movements are a direct result of an increasing awaeness of the dangers of
International Communism.
Refering to the racist undertones of the black clenched fist:
The clenched fist in the posters IS black, there is no racist
undertone there!
As for supporting people who promote equality, communists have
never found a cause they couldn't subvert to their own ends. It's true
that commies will eliminate racism, sexism, etc., they'll
also eliminate all the
freedoms we take for granted in a democracy!
While the letter writer might be willing to give up all his freedom for the sake of equality, others feel that it
is too high a price to pay.
Furthermore, the writer makes no attempt to refute the
claims regarding the activities of International Communists, instead, he
attempts to divert attention by focusing on "right-wing" extremism.
For a Canadian Connection on the "International Marxist Conspiracy",
Judy Rebick of the Canadian Labor Congress and the National Action Committee on the Status of Women
gives a speach
to a Committee of Correspondence meeting concerning the
activities of a Canadian group called the "Action Canada Network".
She admits it is a socialist group but says they don't advertise it,
because they don't want to scare people away. However, reading
the speach, one realizes they have a Socialist/Marxist agend for Canada.
Accord to Ms Rebick, this socialist organization involves politicians, teachers, trade union officials. Quite wide spread for a non-existant conspiracy.
CLICK HERE to visit the website of the Action Canada Network. While on site, check out their list of affiliated organizations. It's a complete cross-section of Canadian society, all asociated and working with a dedicated Marxist organization (ACN). Marxism in canada is not "spintered and disorganized", it is invasive, it has seeped into every corner of our society. People from all walks of life are dedicated to re-creating the vision of Karl Marx in Canada today.

Writer Bill Livingston sees fit to sound the alarm on the subject of "creeping socialism" (wake up to pestilence of Marxism, Letters, June 11), sending dire warnings to the electorate of Welland-Thorold about their MPP Peter Kormos. I find it boring and even amusing when exponents of the Right habitually sound off with tired hackneyed phrases - "pestilence of Marxism", "runious ideology", "Evil Empire", and "better dead than Red". We've heard all of this so many times before, going back to the time of Joe McCaffery(sic), when Tiawan was still called Formosa.
Peter Kormos re-elected because he is a rarity among politicians, one who is honest and cares. It follows that his party is the NDP. He says what he means and means what he says, reasons why he is the member for Weland-thorold and was only beaten by a slim majority for party leader.
On the same page as Mr. Livingston's letter was an editorial on the cuts to hospitals by the Harris government. I read a critical article on the second anniversary of this administration, plus another letter about non-payment of bills by Casino Niagara, the tory governments response to high unemployment figures in this area.
If Mr Livingston was a little objective and forget his hype and critique of unions and the left, he might realize and consider a few pluses, attributable to socialists and union activists, such as the eight-hour work day, the 40-hour week, paid vacations, and retirement benefits. Unions and the NDP helped to bring in medicare, community colleges, affordabe housing for the poor, and ae at this time advocating decent and humane working conditions in place like Phillipines, Bangladesh, and Cambodia. hardly runious ideology.
The Tories are still in the red, pandering to the affluent with tax rebates. Job creation, if any, is part time, non-union, and minimum wage. Food banks are now a way of survival for thousands. Be thankful that there are people like Peter Kormos at Queen's Park.Norm Mclean

You learn something every day, I didn't know "Mayor Joe" was part of the "Red Scare", of course, maybe the writer meant Joe McCarthy.
There was a photo of Mr Kormos in the Standard a few weeks ago lending his support to a group of striking winery workers. Seems that the workers were being oppressed by their evil capitalist bosses. Apparently, the owners didn't want to pay for more than five weeks vacation every year, and they wanted the workers to pay a share of their benefits package. Yep, looks like real opression to me. Of course Mr Kormos was there, exorting the workers to never give in to the bosses terrible demands. I wonder how many weeks holiday the workers would get in a Communist Peoples Paradise?
If the writer really wants to read "tired hackneyed phrases" he should checkout any of the Communist Party links I have provided on my web site. All spout the same garbage about a "dictatorship of the proletariate", "class warfare", "evil capitalist bosses", etc, etc. What's really scary is that commies all over the world use exactly the same language. They also have the same goal: to create a world proletariate dictatorship (that's their phrase, not mine). Furthermore, Communists see socialism as a halfway point to communism. Socialists ARE paving the way to Communism. Also, I think it's only fitting that Socialists are trying to do something in Cambodia to make things better. It was after all communists that made it a hell on earth in the first place.
I almost expected Mr McLean to end his letter by saying "Make the rich pay", another tired hackneyed phrase from the left.
Neither writer chose to respond to the central point of Mr Livingstons letter, namely that Mr Kormos is a supporter of International Communism. This is clearly shown in his attendance at the Marxist Leninist rally. Mr Kormos is also a big fan of Communist Dictator Fidel Castro. If Mr Kormos truly believed in democracy and freedom, he would publically disavow any association or sympathy with International communism, and their aims and programs.
Both of the letters written in response are typical of the mindset of a great majority of Canadians today. they have been blinded by the rhetoric of the Left, they are willing dupes in the Left-wing agenda at work in this country today. I'm sure all the "secret commies" are laughing up their sleeves at the misguided attempts of ordinary canadians to defend their actions. On the other hand, maybe both letter writers ARE commies.
